Since 1 Nov 2026, you pay the price with tax at the shop and get the tax back when you leave Japan.
An estimate before any fee. The amount you receive depends on the shop or refund provider.
Your departure date is later than the 90-day limit for some purchases. Those are left out of the refund.
An item of ¥1,000,000 or more before tax needs its serial number recorded at the shop. Allow extra time.
Put everything you bought at the same store on the same day into one purchase. The ¥5,000 minimum is checked on the total before tax, for each store and day.
Pick the item type and the tax rate is set for you (10% for most goods, 8% for food and non-alcoholic drinks).
Sample figures. Replace them with your own.
Customs must confirm your goods within 90 days of purchase. Day 1 is the day after you buy.
Some shops or refund companies deduct a fee. It varies, so ask at the shop. Leave 0 if unknown.
Show in your currency (optional) — Enter your own rate. This site does not fetch exchange rates.
Your entries are saved automatically in this browser, so you can add purchases as you go during your trip. They are not sent anywhere and do not sync to other devices.
Only shops with tax-free approval can do this, so look for a tax-free sign or ask before you pay. Say you want tax-free and show your passport. The shop records the purchase against that passport, so use the same passport at the airport. Pay the full price with tax. The shop explains how the refund will be paid (card, bank, app or cash, depending on the shop). Some shops ask you to register this at the register, others after you buy, so ask when and how. Keep the receipt.
Do not open or use consumables such as cosmetics and food in Japan, or the refund is lost. If you have used any, do not use the terminal; tell the customs counter instead. You must carry all the goods out of Japan yourself.
The order is: tax-free terminal, then bag drop, then security. The terminal is a self-service machine in the international departures lobby, not a staff counter. Checked bags cannot be taken back, so do this first. Hold all your purchases in your hands, and do not put them in a bag you will check.
Use the same passport you showed at the shop. The screen then shows green or red. The official guide does not ask for receipts, but keep them handy in case customs asks. At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha you can use Visit Japan Web on your phone instead, in the Wi-Fi area before security.
Green: no inspection is needed and the procedure is done. Go and check your bags. Red: a customs inspection is needed. Follow the screen to the customs inspection spot and show all your goods. If any item cannot be shown, that receipt gets no refund. Leave enough time, because the refund is lost if you cannot finish before boarding.
The shop or its refund company pays the tax back by the method you chose. Haneda, Narita and Naha also have self-service cash refund machines after security, but only for shops that support them. Timing and fees depend on the shop.
Locations and hours can change. Check the airport's official page on the day.
Terminals 2 and 3 have tax-free terminals on the 3rd floor, before security. Terminal 1 has none. Cash refund machines are after security, and only work for shops that support them.
Terminal 1 has 12 tax-free terminals on the 4th floor, with customs staff and an inspection spot. Terminal 2 has 4 terminals. Customs recommends Visit Japan Web to avoid queues.
Terminal locations are not listed here yet. Check each airport's official website. The rule is the same: use the terminal before you check your bags.
